Prince William caused a rift with King Charles by allegedly “empowering” his insiders, even though he hasn’t yet taken the throne.

Prince William is reportedly preparing to make significant changes to the Royal Family’s structure,

with plans that could include involving his cousin, Lady Louise Windsor, in the royal duties of the future.

According to sources, William has big ambitions for the monarchy and its role in public life,

which may involve bringing younger members into the fold to help shoulder the increasing responsibilities.

One potential beneficiary of these plans is Lady Louise Windsor, who has spent much of her life away from the royal spotlight but is now attending the University of St Andrews,

the same institution where William and Kate Middleton met as students.

Lady Louise, who is the daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has had the option to take on the royal title of “Princess” since turning 18. However, she has yet to formally adopt the title, reflecting her parents’ desire to provide their children with as normal an upbringing as possible. While Louise and her younger brother James, Earl of Wessex, were both offered the chance to use the HRH title from birth, Prince Edward and Sophie declined the use of royal styles to avoid drawing their children too much into the limelight.

Despite her desire for a relatively private life, sources indicate that Prince William is considering bringing both Louise and James into the fold of working royals. This would mean they would formally take on public duties on behalf of the Crown and be part of the Sovereign Grant funding. As 15th and 16th in line to the throne, Louise and James have long been considered distant from the monarchy’s core responsibilities, and their parents have ensured they have lived out of the public eye as much as possible.

The shift in William’s plans comes at a time when the Royal Family is grappling with the reality of an aging generation of working royals. King Charles has made it clear that his vision for the monarchy is one of a “slimmed-down” institution, with fewer members carrying out public engagements in an effort to reduce costs to the taxpayer. However, this approach has been increasingly scrutinized as it has left fewer royals available to fulfill the growing number of engagements required by the family. Both King Charles and Princess Kate faced health challenges last year, with Kate undergoing cancer treatment, which highlighted the need for younger, capable members to assist with the workload.

The average age of working royals is currently 69, and if you exclude William and Kate, the average rises dramatically to 77. The increasing demands of royal life, alongside the challenges of balancing family life with royal obligations, have made it clear that more younger members might be needed to step in and support the aging royal roster. William’s plans to include more members of his extended family could help alleviate some of the pressure placed on him and his wife, Kate, especially as they continue to raise their three young children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

The situation has become even more pressing following the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from royal duties, which has further limited the number of active members of the family available to carry out engagements. King Charles’s plan for a streamlined monarchy was not built to accommodate the absence of his younger son, and the Royal Family has found itself in a position where additional hands are needed to ensure its continued success. The involvement of younger members, like Lady Louise and James, could provide a solution to this problem, ensuring that the family remains both visible and active in its public service.

Princess Anne, a seasoned royal and advocate for maintaining a strong monarchy, has even voiced her concerns about the slimmed-down vision, stating that it may not be the best approach given the current circumstances. In an interview in 2023, Anne remarked that Charles had originally proposed the idea of a smaller monarchy when there were more members to take on royal duties. However, with fewer royals available now, the practicality of this model is being questioned.

While Sophie, Louise’s mother, previously expressed in 2020 that it was unlikely her children would take on the HRH style or royal duties, the changing dynamics within the Royal Family may prompt the Wessex children to reconsider their position. The idea of involving Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex, in the future of the monarchy could ultimately help secure the Royal Family’s long-term sustainability and relevance, especially as the family faces increasing public scrutiny and evolving expectations.

As Prince William and Kate continue to navigate the complexities of royal life while raising their young family, the inclusion of more working royals may provide the support needed to ensure the monarchy remains both effective and accessible in the years to come. Whether Louise and James will choose to take on these responsibilities remains to be seen, but their potential involvement could be a key component of the future of the British monarchy.
